  2. Perceived Environmental Uncertainty Along the Thai Rice Supply Chain: An Empirical Approach

    Uncertainty generates unstable processes along supply chains, which in the end worsen their performance. Some sources of uncertainty in agri-food supply chains are distinct from those affecting general supply chains. These include issues such as variable harvest and production yields, and the huge impact of climate conditions. Thus, a deep understanding of which uncertainty factors mostly affect on agri-food supply chain management and its performance is vital for allow agribusiness to deal with them effectively. The purpose of this study is to discuss the perceived environmental uncertainties in the context of the rice supply chain in Thailand. A review of the literature indicates that perception of seven factors --supply, demand, process, planning and control, competitor behavior, government policy, and climate uncertainty-- are all potential causes of uncertainty and hence instability in the Thai rice supply chain. The research method used in order to confirm these factors is a survey with mail-out questionnaires to rice millers and rice exporters in Thailand. Descriptive statistics are employed to review which uncertainty factors within the rice supply chain are perceived as the greatest. Major findings show that planning and control, competitor behavior, government policy and climate uncertainties are the most influential factors. Because they depend upon information availability, accuracy, and throughput times, planning and control remain highly uncertain because information technology is rarely used in the Thai rice industry. Thus, lack of appropriate IT tools means that environmental uncertainties cannot be dealt with effectively. In addition, there is high competition in both the domestic and international rice market, leading to highly unpredictable competitor behaviors. As is the case in many developing countries, Thai government policies are turbulent, and the new factor of climate uncertainty in agri-food supply chain management is becoming more and more important in the Thai rice industry.

  3. Moderating Role of Logistics Information Technology on the Logistics Relationships and Logistics Service Quality

    An amount of research has shown that the adoption of technological innovations is the most important tool for enterprises to keep their competitive advantage. Recently, a body of evidence shows that logistics companies can increase their performance by employing new technologies. Many logistics companies began to improve their operation efficiency by continuous implementation of information or automation technologies according to their business characteristics. Logistics companies should employed new information technologies to raise their service capability in the e-commerce age. The main purpose of this study was to examine the impact of logistics relationships on logistics service quality with logistics information technology as moderator. A total of 109 feedbacks received from the 250 questionnaires distributed. Analysis was done to determine the most significant domain influencing logistics service quality. Results revealed that trust, commitment, communication and satisfactions influence the service quality except for bonding which showed no influence on the logistics service quality. The logistics information technology had no moderate effects on the relationship between logistics relationships and logistics service quality; however, the existence of trust and communication has made the moderation effect viable. The present study makes contribution to the logistics practitioners in practicing harmonized business strategy and suggestion for future studies. This study explore the relationships marketing in developing new construct for relationships dimension, which to explain the significant influence to the logistics industry and also to look for empirical evidence, on the relationships constructs, and contribution to the logistics industry.

  4. Added Value and Performance Analyses of Edamame Soybean Supply Chain: A Case Study

    This paper describes a conceptual framework for the added value and performance analyses of Edamame supply chain management with a company as a buyer and farmers as its suppliers. The main objective of this paper was to illustrate how XCo, as the company of fresh Edamame, can analyze as well as assess the added value and performance in each supply chain members. Data in this case study were collected through in-depth interviews with the supply chain members and from secondary data records available at the supply chain members. The supply chain structure and two main supply chain issues, i.e. added value and business performance at each supply members, were described, analyzed and compared. The supply chain added value was described and analyzed using Hayami method, while the supply chain performance was analyzed using the combination of Data Envelopment Analysis with pairwise comparison of Analytical Hierarchy Process. The results show that XCo obtained the highest added value, however about 50% of farmer groups still had negative added values. Based on the performance analysis, it was known that failures to comply with the order quantity and time delivery schedule were major factors that decrease the farmers’group-efficiency. XCo together with farmers’ group members should collaborate in scheduling the planting and harvesting.

  5. Lead Logistics Provider and its Effect on Supply Chain Alliances - A Case Study on Taiwan Motor Industry

    The increasing competition due to globalization and e-Business development has stimulated manufacturers to pursue supply chain alliances more aggressively. The primary motivation for this is to minimize overall costs and gain mutual benefits through supplier-manufacturer integration. Supply chain alliance is one of the key strategic co-operations adopted by manufacturers to simultaneously reduce costs and improve service. The advancement of supply chain alliance is moving from a Third-Party Logistics System to a Lead Logistics Provider Management System. The Lead Logistics Provider plays the role of logistics manager who lead the logistics operations across the entire supply chain with the ability to provide superior expertise in transportation services, warehousing capabilities, information technology, and materials replenishment among the other logistics activities. A Lead Logistics Provider system framework is composed of three components that include Resources Management, Information Central System, and Logistics Synchronization. This study presents a case of a Taiwanese automotive supply chain illustrating the application of supply chain alliances via the Lead Logistics Provider system. Significant improvement on inventory costs and improvement on the transportation performance is reported resulting from the application of this system. This scheme also showed enhanced service quality that creates business opportunities among the supply chain partners.

  6. Sustainable Supply Chain Based Scenarios for Optimizing Trade-off Between Indonesian Furniture and Crude-Palm-Oil Industries

    Trade-off, as the consequences of using the same resources, often occurs in the development of two or more business activities, e.g. between the supply chain of Indonesian furniture and crude-palm-oil (CPO) industries. The two industries use the land area to get supply of raw material. The furniture industries need wide area of forest to obtain an adequate wood supply while the CPO industries need wide land area to open new palm plantations. The previous research has identified the relationship of the two industries and the trade-off between them using a dynamic model approach. This research aims to modify the model and to propose some scenarios that may optimize the trade-off based on the previous results. We provide scenarios based on the development policy of Indonesian government. The scenarios are simulated using the modified of dynamic model. We obtain that the best scenario is scenario 3 which can optimize the trade-off between the supply chain of furniture and CPO industries in line with long term sustainable development. The scenario is set by increasing the productivity of palm plantations to change the pattern from extension into intensification by using robust palm plants.

  8. Dyadic Relationships and Power within a Supply Network Context

    Recently in supply management research, the power theme has gained growing interest. The analysis of power in the context of dyadic relationship between a buyer and supplier has been criticized for having a limited viewpoint because it fails to explain multiple interactions. Power is a socially embedded phenomenon and, therefore, the transactions and relationships included in supply networks should also be taken under scrutiny. Thus, the aim of this study is to analyze the impact of network effects and the influence of power on the nature of collaboration between buyers and suppliers within a supply network. The case study analyzes the issue in the Finnish food industry. The results show that the power relations have an influence on the nature of the relationship, and the sources of power that are based on the network effects may crucially determine the power position of the network actor and, moreover, the power relation between two actors.

  9. Building Competitive Advantage Through Innovative Reverse Logistics Capabilities

    The recent global economic recession has forced many business firms to increase efficiency, cut waste and invest in innovation in order to sustain competitiveness. The purpose of this study is to explore how firms handle their returns processes, an area which can impact on competitive advantage. The research focuses on short life-cycle products. The study used case study methodology, conducting in-depth interviews with key logistics managers in four companies. The findings revealed that, although each company had different emphasis in handling product returns, three key drivers, namely information technology, knowledge sharing and relationship networks, had positive impacts on its reverse logistics capabilities and consequently on their competitive advantage.

  10. Supplier Selection in JIT Automotive Industry: A Multivariate Approach

    In this globalization era, manufacturing industries have experienced many significant changes, indicated by highly-innovated and short-aged product emerging today. This condition has forced manufacturing industries to put more consideration to their core capability, thus consequently has made outsourcing activities become an important and strategic decision. A company’s efforts in achieving competitive benefits begin with managing its suppliers. In real conditions, selecting suppliers is not an easy thing to decide, yet it needs a correct strategic way in order to get potential suppliers. Furthermore in Just-In-Time (JIT) manufacturer, supplier selection is an important strategic issue for the company, because it is a long-term investment and success key to the JIT philosophy implementation. The objective of this paper is to design a framework for supplier selection in JIT manufacturing based on multivariate approach. This paper is based on a study in the largest JIT automotive manufacturer in Indonesia. The design begins by applying factor analysis to settle attributes used in the supplier selection process. Afterward, a conjoint analysis is used to find out the company’s preferences of its suppliers through the assessment of profiles, which are the combinations of attributes and levels used in the selection process. Selecting potential supplier can be established using Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) method. This method would specify company’s preferences visually in a multidimensional space, and in the end it would set the Euclidean distance for each supplier compared to the ideal point. Eventually, this perception map would help the company in choosing suppliers which are located within their ideal point.

  11. Distribution of Customer Perception Information within the Supply Chain

    The purpose of the paper is the elicitation of customers’ perception information regarding consumer goods within different levels of accuracy. In the industry for consumer goods many efforts are carried out for the elicitation of customer information, but a systematic preparation and distribution of the gathered information is missing. Information with different level of accuracy circulates within a company but is not centralized for corporate use. Based on a proposed holistic framework for objectifying customer information for supply chains’ product specifications study procedures have been developed and corresponded studies were conducted. The results show that a gradual approach objectifies customers’ perception. Products can be divided into sub-elements by identifying perception clusters and quality attributes. First correlations between customers’ judgment and characteristics of quality attributes can be shown.

  12. Multi-period Supply Network of Food Products Based on Time-Windows with Sensitivity Analysis

    Supply chain management is a cross-function approach to manage the movement of products toward consumers. Here, we propose a supply network which considers multiple food products with time windows. The proposed model considers different customers who are serviced by one supplier. The supplier provides various products being kept in different depots. Each depot uses different types of vehicles to satisfy the orders. Initially, all depots are stationed at the designated locations. The applicability of the model is illustrated using a numerical experiment. A comprehensive sensitivity analysis is worked out to show the flexibility of the proposed mathematical model.

  14. Ranking Operations Management Conferences

    The purpose of this paper is to present a ranking of operations management conferences. Several publications have appeared in the field of Operations Management which rank related journals. Many academics also publish at conferences but we have not come across publications that rank conferences. Several ranking systems exist for journals based on, for example, perceived relevance and quality, citation, and author affiliation. . In this paper the first attempt is made in developing an operations management conference ranking based upon author affiliation. This is done in two steps. First, based on an analysis of contributions to operations management journals a ranking of affiliations is established. Then, this ranking is used to determine the author affiliation index for several conferences such as from the Production and Operations Management Society (POMS), European Operations Management Association (EurOMA), Operations and Supply Chain Management (OSCM), and the Operations Management Division of the Academy of Management (AoM). The results provide information for authors that help in deciding which operations management oriented conferences to attend. It was found that the AoM conference is on average the conference with the highest First Author Affiliation Index (FAAI) scores. It also scores the highest for the six journals combined in four of the six years. The POMS conference scored highest in three of the six years for the three US-based journals while the EurOMA conference scored highest in four of the six years for European-based journals. The findings can be used to make more informed decisions related to which operations management conference to attend based upon the assumption of quality of presented papers.

  15. Environmentally-Conscious Supply Chain Design in Support of Food Security

    This paper seeks to design food supply chain structures that can provide food security for every person in the world while supporting long-term environmental sustainability. In particular, we provide alternatives to the current food supply chain structure and analyze their potential for providing food security, in terms of productive capacity and long-term environmental sustainability. Given the current world population and expected continued growth, our analysis suggests that environmentally-sustainable food supply chains would be most effectively supported by local and organic agriculture, while maintaining a parallel industrial agricultural system. This hybrid system would adopt environmentally-sustainable principles whenever possible, seeking to increase reliance on renewable inputs, reduce toxic outputs and maintain biodiversity.

  16. Extension of a Bernoulli Demand Inventory Model

    In this article a single-item, continuous monitoring (s, Q) inventory model with probabilistic demand following Bernoulli distribution and probabilistic lead time of order replenishment is considered. The model extends a Bernoulli demand inventory model, available in the literature. We allow a non-zero reordering inventory position. Some properties are shown for the model and a search method is given to find the optimal values of the policy parameters. A numerical experiment is done for the model and some observations are made.

    The Maximal Covering Location Problem (MCLP) has the objective of maximizing the total demand volume covered by a facility within a maximum allowable travel distance, S. In this paper, three sets of data 30-node, 324-node and 818-node networks with no existing facilities are analyzed as the capacitated model of MCLP (CMCLP) and first solved by the commercial optimization software, CPLEX. As the software produces results which violate the capacity constraint when the constraints are tight, an alternative approach of Genetic Algorithm based heuristics is used to solve the problem for more competitive results. Combination of the best number of facilities to open and the random node order assignment is used to maximize the percentage of total demand covered. The approach is found to solve all the capacitated MCLP in shorter time and in more promising result compared to CPLEX. Finally, the result of the approach is presented and applied to analyze a “real-world” example on a selected area, Telok Panglima Garang, Selangor which is currently served by 5 public health care facilities. This is to explore the implications of the model as the area already has existing facilities and to provide insight on future decisions that can be made on the expansion and development of current facilities.

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of case study on student learning using Laboratory for Innovative Technology and Engineering Education (LITEE) case study. It has been proposed that student learning outcomes will be improved after using the case analysis. Seven constructs have been developed to measure different aspects related to student learning. Pre-assessment and post-assessment of student learning outcomes has been conducted to determine the effectiveness of case study approach in enhancing student learning. The results show that using case analysis significantly improves students’ higher-order cognitive domain of learning (HC) and self-efficacy (SE). The paper makes contribution to our understanding of the effectiveness of case study on improving learning outcomes of undergraduate students in operations management. Implications for educators and future research have been outlined.

    The purpose of this paper is to present a ranking of operations management conferences. Several publications have appeared in the field of Operations Management which rank related journals. Many academics also publish at conferences but we have not come across publications that rank conferences. Several ranking systems exist for journals based on, for example, perceived relevance and quality, citation, and author affiliation. . In this paper the first attempt is made in developing an operations management conference ranking based upon author affiliation. This is done in two steps. First, based on an analysis of contributions to operations management journals a ranking of affiliations is established. Then, this ranking is used to determine the author affiliation index for several conferences such as from the Production and Operations Management Society (POMS), European Operations Management Association (EurOMA), Operations and Supply Chain Management (OSCM), and the Operations Management Division of the Academy of Management (AoM). The results provide information for authors that help in deciding which operations management oriented conferences to attend. It was found that the AoM conference is on average the conference with the highest First Author Affiliation Index (FAAI) scores. It also scores the highest for the six journals combined in four of the six years. The POMS conference scored highest in three of the six years for the three US-based journals while the EurOMA conference scored highest in four of the six years for European-based journals. The findings can be used to make more informed decisions related to which operations management conference to attend based upon the assumption of quality of presented papers.

    This paper seeks to design food supply chain structures that can provide food security for every person in the world while supporting long-term environmental sustainability. In particular, we provide alternatives to the current food supply chain structure and analyze their potential for providing food security, in terms of productive capacity and long-term environmental sustainability. Given the current world population and expected continued growth, our analysis suggests that environmentally-sustainable food supply chains would be most effectively supported by local and organic agriculture, while maintaining a parallel industrial agricultural system. This hybrid system would adopt environmentally-sustainable principles whenever possible, seeking to increase reliance on renewable inputs, reduce toxic outputs and maintain biodiversity.

    In this article a single-item, continuous monitoring (s, Q) inventory model with probabilistic demand following Bernoulli distribution and probabilistic lead time of order replenishment is considered. The model extends a Bernoulli demand inventory model, available in the literature. We allow a non-zero reordering inventory position. Some properties are shown for the model and a search method is given to find the optimal values of the policy parameters. A numerical experiment is done for the model and some observations are made.

    The Maximal Covering Location Problem (MCLP) has the objective of maximizing the total demand volume covered by a facility within a maximum allowable travel distance, S. In this paper, three sets of data 30-node, 324-node and 818-node networks with no existing facilities are analyzed as the capacitated model of MCLP (CMCLP) and first solved by the commercial optimization software, CPLEX. As the software produces results which violate the capacity constraint when the constraints are tight, an alternative approach of Genetic Algorithm based heuristics is used to solve the problem for more competitive results. Combination of the best number of facilities to open and the random node order assignment is used to maximize the percentage of total demand covered. The approach is found to solve all the capacitated MCLP in shorter time and in more promising result compared to CPLEX. Finally, the result of the approach is presented and applied to analyze a “real-world” example on a selected area, Telok Panglima Garang, Selangor which is currently served by 5 public health care facilities. This is to explore the implications of the model as the area already has existing facilities and to provide insight on future decisions that can be made on the expansion and development of current facilities.

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of case study on student learning using Laboratory for Innovative Technology and Engineering Education (LITEE) case study. It has been proposed that student learning outcomes will be improved after using the case analysis. Seven constructs have been developed to measure different aspects related to student learning. Pre-assessment and post-assessment of student learning outcomes has been conducted to determine the effectiveness of case study approach in enhancing student learning. The results show that using case analysis significantly improves students’ higher-order cognitive domain of learning (HC) and self-efficacy (SE). The paper makes contribution to our understanding of the effectiveness of case study on improving learning outcomes of undergraduate students in operations management. Implications for educators and future research have been outlined.
